Understand the historical shift from the first recorded spaces for healing to the common hospital institutions seen today

Understand how neuroscience and architecture is impacting hospital design

Outline and understand architectural features considered to form healing spaces

Consider the current problems that are preventing hospitals from creating enjoyable and healing spaces within the architecture

Evaluate existing hospitals and healthcare buildings effectiveness on providing positive patient experience and healing spaces

Research the historical progression of hospitals, depicting influential or landmark examples to exemplify the centurial changes in approach to healthcare architecture

Explore the scientific research, such as evidence-based design, that is contributing to the understanding and application of scientifically measured architectural features

Assess interior and exterior aspects of the built environment that have healing and calming impacts on patients, and evaluate the extent to which they are relevant

Research the economic and efficiency factors in addition to cultural and societal considerations that impact the way hospitals are designed and how that may prohibit the provision of healing architecture

Compare four hospital and healthcare institutions on sense of place, architecture, interior and spatial experience

Research and the collaboration between neuroscience and architecture is still relatively early on both the extent and definitive ways that architecture can influence to heal or help to heal

The majority of primary research participants would not have sufficient knowledge in architecture and design, therefore it limits the understanding in their answers

Due to the limits of word count and project timescale, there are scientific factors, healing architectural features and conclusions that could not be fully analysed and explored

Interviewees were from one geographical area, therefore their experiences as patients might not be applicable on a wider scale

A variety of secondary research sources, such as books, eBooks, journals, audio-visual content and websites to gain an understanding into healing spaces and their suitability within a hospital environment

General participant survey on hospital environments, experience and architecture and design

Refined participant survey for those who have experienced extended hospital stays, and as a result have a more proficient understanding of being a patient

Case studies to three separate healthcare institutions, with one site comprising of two establishments for comparison
